Eco-design of packaging : new guidelines in April 2018
“Recycling capability is an important aspect of the eco-design of packaging. But eco-design is more than just design for recycling”. This was an important conclusion of the Eco-Design Forum (1) which took place during the interpack. Packaging makes an important contribution to sustainability due to its primary properties by protecting the packaged goods from early spoilage or damage. “People who make decisions on packaging design should not only consider the end of life of the packaging but also its properties during use” explained packaging expert Harald Pilz from denkstatt. The Round Table and the IK felt that eco-design needed to be an integral part of corporate strategy.
There is a need to take a critical look at the marketing aspects of packaging. Recycling specialists urge packaging designers not to let the environmentally friendly design of packaging fall victim to its advertising effectiveness on the shelf, for example. The speakers all felt that consumers as well as manufacturers had an obligation here which should be explained by raising the awareness of the criteria and performance of sustainable packaging. According to consumer protection institutes, many companies are not yet active enough in this area.
The Round Table on the Eco-Design of Plastics Packaging has launched the Guidelines Project to assist in integrating eco-design into corporate management processes. “Eco-design is a multidimensional concept” said IK speaker Dr. Isabell, Schmidt as she explained the background to the Guidelines Project. “Decisions on the properties and materials used in packaging need to be made a new for every single item of packaging. The guidelines will consist of criteria and decision tools that can provide practical aids for the development of sustainable packaging solutions”.
The first draft of the guidelines is to be drawn up in collaboration with the Institute for Environmental Strategies, Ökopol, by November this year. Workshops are planned for January and March 2018 to gather feedback from various stakeholders. The final guidelines are scheduled for presentation in April 2018.
