BELGIUM: First successful tests on K-Cup compostable coffee pods

NatureWorks and IMA Coffee have started the first trials of K-Cup compatible compostable coffee pods.

Compatibility testing is ongoing at the IMA Coffee Lab on capsules, filters and top lid films to identify and achieve optimal material sealing parameters and find the appropriate configuration of IMA packaging machines. Micro-leakage detection tests have already given more than encouraging and optimistic results allowing a significant advance.

NatureWorks has built a custom data acquisition system, used to understand and compare the performance of different pod designs. With these promising results, NatureWorks has begun partnering with converters in North America for commercialization to brands and roasters.
