Le projet s\u2019inscrit dans le cadre de l\u2019initiative Fraunhofer Biogenic Value Creation and Smart Farming, soutenue par le minist\u00e8re f\u00e9d\u00e9ral allemand de l\u2019\u00c9ducation et de la Recherche (BMBF), le minist\u00e8re bavarois de l\u2019\u00c9conomie, du D\u00e9veloppement r\u00e9gional et de l\u2019\u00c9nergie et le minist\u00e8re des Sciences, de la Culture, des Affaires f\u00e9d\u00e9rales et europ\u00e9ennes du Mecklembourg-Pom\u00e9ranie-Occidentale.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les plantes \u00e9tudi\u00e9es dans le cadre du projet sont cultiv\u00e9es dans des tourbi\u00e8res et des marais r\u00e9humidifi\u00e9s. \u00c0 l\u2019avenir, elles pourront croitre plus ais\u00e9ment puisqu\u2019au moins 30% des surfaces des for\u00eats, des prairies et des zones humides doivent \u00eatre r\u00e9humidifi\u00e9es et renatur\u00e9es conform\u00e9ment \u00e0 la loi europ\u00e9enne sur la restauration de la nature de f\u00e9vrier 2024. Cette initiative est nomm\u00e9e paludiculture. \u00abIl s\u2019agit de cultiver des esp\u00e8ces v\u00e9g\u00e9tales adapt\u00e9es aux conditions locales dans des tourbi\u00e8res humides. Les paludicultures contribuent \u00e0 l\u2019entretien des tourbi\u00e8res et \u00e0 la protection du climat car elles minimisent les \u00e9missions de carbone \u2013 une raison de plus pour les \u00e9tudier davantage\u00bb, explique Fabian Kayatz, responsable du projet \u00e0 l\u2019Institut Fraunhofer IVV.<br>Par rapport au bois, les roseaux et les plantes similaires se caract\u00e9risent par une faible teneur en lignine, ce qui permet d\u2019utiliser moins de produits chimiques lors de la r\u00e9duction en p\u00e2te des fibres v\u00e9g\u00e9tales pour obtenir une fibre de qualit\u00e9 suffisamment \u00e9lev\u00e9e n\u00e9cessaire aux applications d\u2019emballage. C\u2019est le r\u00e9sultat de la caract\u00e9risation chimique des paludicultures de la r\u00e9gion des marais de Freisinger Moos. Selon la plante, les chercheurs ont obtenu une teneur en lignine comprise entre 20 et 23%, soit un niveau de 15 \u00e0 25% inf\u00e9rieur \u00e0 ceui du bois tendre et du bois dur. De plus, la pulpe de ces fibres v\u00e9g\u00e9tales a de meilleures propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques que celle issue de la paille, du ma\u00efs ou du bambou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En outre, la lignine des plantes non ligneuses peut \u00eatre lib\u00e9r\u00e9e ou s\u00e9par\u00e9e plus facilement des fibres, ce qui permet de mettre en place un mode de fabrication moins \u00e9nergivore que les proc\u00e9d\u00e9s conventionnels \u00e0 base de fibres de bois. Ici, les chercheurs ont pu travailler \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures inf\u00e9rieures \u00e0 100\u00b0C, soit jusqu\u2019\u00e0 45% inf\u00e9rieures aux proc\u00e9d\u00e9s classiques. Les r\u00e9sultats ont montr\u00e9 que, selon les param\u00e8tres, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 83% de la lignine pouvait \u00eatre lib\u00e9r\u00e9e avec la m\u00e9thode Fraunhofer IVV. \u00abApr\u00e8s la r\u00e9colte des plantes des tourbi\u00e8res, la biomasse obtenue peut \u00eatre transform\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle industrielle dans l\u2019usine de p\u00e2te \u00e0 papier. La production de p\u00e2te \u00e0 papier se ferait ensuite en r\u00e9duisant en p\u00e2te les fibres v\u00e9g\u00e9tales\u00bb, explique Kayatz, qui pr\u00e9cise que ces \u00e9tapes sont men\u00e9es encore \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle du laboratoire. Le rendement en p\u00e2te \u00e0 papier a atteint 53%, en fonction des param\u00e8tres combin\u00e9s, ce qui se situe dans la fourchette attendue pour les proc\u00e9d\u00e9s chimiques conventionnels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019autres essais ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 que les papiers plats et moul\u00e9s en fibres produits pr\u00e9sentaient une bonne aptitude \u00e0 la transformation. La r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la traction de ces premiers \u00e9chantillons \u00e9tait nettement sup\u00e9rieure aux valeurs de l\u2019\u00e9chantillon de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence (dans ce cas, une bo\u00eete \u00e0 \u0153ufs). En ajoutant des additifs tels que l\u2019amidon et l\u2019agent de collage, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 possible d\u2019augmenter la r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la traction et l\u2019\u00e9lasticit\u00e9 ainsi que les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s hydrofuges des papiers. De plus, les papiers produits \u00e0 partir de paludiculture se sont av\u00e9r\u00e9s adapt\u00e9s aux m\u00e9thodes de transformation telles que le pliage, le collage et l\u2019impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gr\u00e2ce aux proc\u00e9d\u00e9s de moulage par fibres et d\u2019emboutissage profond, les chercheurs ont pu produire des pots et des barquettes en papier solides \u00e0 partir de fibres de roseau sans utiliser d\u2019additifs. A cette occasion, une installation de laboratoire a \u00e9t\u00e9 sp\u00e9cialement con\u00e7ue pour la production de ces prototypes. Des ajustements seront cependant encore n\u00e9cessaires pour passer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle industrielle, les premiers emballages devant \u00eatre optimis\u00e9s, en ce qui concerne par exemple leur perception sensorielle ou le choix du rev\u00eatement.
